General Segway PT Questions

  • What does riding a Segway PT feel like?
  • Riding the Segway PT feels like nothing you've ever experienced because there's never been anything like it. Step on and your instinct will be to steady yourself, as you would on anything with two wheels. But almost immediately you'll realize that the Segway PT is balancing for you, almost like it has become an extension of you. Just lean forward a little and you'll see that the Segway PT isn't moving you on its own; it's moving in response to you and what you tell it to do. It all feels natural and really cool. Be sure to review the User Materials before using a Segway PT.

  • How does it move? How does it balance?
  • The Segway PT uses LeanSteer™ Technology to move you from Point A to B. Gently move the LeanSteer frame and handlebar left or right in the direction you want to travel and feel the machine respond almost instantly.

The Segway PT balances by using five micro-machined angular rate sensors and two accelerometers that sense the changing terrain and your body position at 100 times per second.

  • How much does a Segway PT cost?
  • Due to exchange rates, tariffs and other taxes, pricing can vary. It’s best to consult your local authorized Segway dealer using our dealer locator. But rest assured, you’ll be purchasing the same quality product in your area as long as you are purchasing from an authorized dealer. You can also build your very own Segway PT using our online product configurator and request pricing on that specific configuration from a dealer of your choice directly.

  • Are Segway PT's legal in my state?
  • While in general no state prohibitions exist in the United States, local regulations may exist. We recommend that you check your local regulations prior to use in public areas. An updated list of domestic regulations by state is available at http://www.segway.com/regulatory.

  • Is the Segway PT more efficient than a car?
  • Yes. The Segway PT is 11 times more efficient than the average American car, and over three times more efficient than even the highest-mileage scooters. As a zero-emissions vehicle, the Segway PT can also go indoors. It does draw electric power during recharge, but that electricity causes fourteen times less greenhouse gas emissions than driving a car.

  • Does a Segway PT fit in the trunk of a car?
  • It depends, but it will most likely fit into most trunks. The LeanSteer frame attaches from the powerbase to give you more flexibility during transport. Each LeanSteer frame is height-adjustable to the comfort of the rider and can be collapsed for storage as well. Using the Tool-less Release accessory which is available for purchase, you can easily detach the LeanSteer frame from the base if you find yourself doing this frequently.

  • Are there weight limits for the Segway PT?
  • Yes, Segway sets weight limits for rider safety and to reduce the risk of damage to the Segway PT. A rider must not be less than 100 lbs. (45 kg). The maximum payload (which includes rider and all cargo) for the Segway PT is 260 lbs. (117 kg). The total weight of any handlebar cargo plus any additional attachments hanging from the handlebar should not exceed 10 lbs. (4.5 kg).

  • How fast can the Segway PT travel?
  • Each Segway PT comes with two operational settings, "beginner" and "standard". Beginner setting is set to 6mph/13kph, and the standard setting is set to 12.5mph/20kph. 12.5 mph is roughly equal to a 5-minute mile, a really fast run.

  • How far can a Segway PT go on a single charge?
  • Depending on your base model, payload, riding style and terrain, a single charge can support up to 24 miles/38km of travel. You’ll be amazed at just how far that really is.

  • How do you charge a Segway PT?
  • A standard wall outlet can charge your Segway PT’s batteries. It takes about 15 minutes to get enough charge to travel one mile/1.6km. A full day’s charge (approx. 8-10 hrs.) costs less than a newspaper in electricity.

  • What colors are available?
  • The Segway PT is available in several colors and finishes, depending on your application. The i2 is available in three flavors – gloss white, anodized black and metallic sage. The x2 is available in a standard silver/anodized black to get you that additional durability you’re seeking. Learn more about the available color options here.

  • What’s a glide?
  • A glide is a trip you take riding your Segway PT. We like the name because it’s simple and very accurately describes the motion of riding, which is smooth and even, like you’re gliding across a surface. Gliding is a great way to meet new people, see new sights, or just get out and enjoy the day.

  • Can I use the Segway PT in the rain?
  • Yes. The device is completely sealed to allow it to operate in wet weather. Just be careful on slippery surfaces.

  • What’s the Segway Smile?
  • The Segway Smile is exhibited by nearly everyone who’s ever ridden a Segway PT. The Segway PT is more than a product; it’s an experience unlike anything you’ve tried before. Going from place to place becomes fun. Riders become empowered pedestrians that cover more ground, work smarter, become more productive and move more intelligently. This knowledge manifests itself in an ear-to-ear grin.

Not sure what we’re talking about? Stop someone riding a Segway PT the next time you see one and you’ll understand. You’ll probably smile back.

  • What’s the InfoKey™ Controller?
  • A recent addition to Segway PTs, the InfoKey controller is essentially a key for your unit. Each is uniquely programmed to start and lock a specific Segway PT. It also provides real-time information such as battery life, speed and system performance. On top of that, there’s a built-in anti-theft system to discourage anyone from tampering with your Segway PT, should you need to leave it parked. Should anyone attempt to move your Segway PT, an alarm will sound, your Segway PT will start vibrating, the wheels will lock, and a visual alert will be sent wirelessly to your InfoKey controller. How’s that for sophisticated security?

  • How many wireless InfoKey controllers come with the Segway PT?
  • Two wireless Infokey controllers are included in the box with each Segway PT (as of May 15, 2007). That’s one for you and one for a lucky friend, should anyone else be fortunate enough to ride your new Segway PT. We can’t see you sharing, but you never know. Remember, as the owner of a Segway PT, you are responsible for training any other person who you let ride in accordance with the instructions in the User Materials.

  • Can I configure my own accessory packages?
  • Yes. Accessories were chosen for the current packages based on specific uses by our customers, but you can customize your very own Segway PT using our new online product configurator. After you've built your custom machine, send it along to a local dealer for more information. Did you know that there are more than two quadrillion different possible Segway PT configurations?

  • Can you insure a Segway PT?
  • We recommend you contact your insurance company or local agent to find out the type of coverage available for Segway PTs, but many options are available today. Progressive Insurance does provide personal use coverage for Segway PTs in most states. Call 1-800-PROGRESSIVE or visit www.progressive.com for more.

  • Do you still manufacture the first generation of Segway Personal Transporters (e167, i167, i170/180, XT/GT, p133)?
  • No. We currently manufacture our “Gen II” or second generation Segway PTs, as we call them. These include the Segway PT i2 and x2. However, we still offer support for the first generation models if you need assistance. Contact your local dealer or Segway support directly.

  • What’s your Renewable Energy Credits Program?
  • Segway Inc. offers a Renewable Energy Credits Program (REC) that encourages the use and development of clean energy. For every participating Segway PT owner, Segway purchases enough RECs for a year’s worth of use – about 200 kilowatt hours. This way, Segway helps mitigate the negative environmental effects of charging a Segway PT. It’s free to sign up here.

  • Should I try to troubleshoot issues with my Segway PT before contacting my local dealer?
  • There are certain problems you can troubleshoot on your own before contacting your authorized dealer, distributor, or Segway Customer Care. Refer to your Reference Manual for details.

  • Is there any recall information I should know about?
  • You can find recall information here.

Segway PT Owner Questions

  • What can I use to clean my Segway PT?
  • Keep your Segway PT looking squeaky clean with mild soap and water. Products that protect and shine rubber, plastic, and vinyl surfaces are not recommended, as these products may impact tire traction. Be sure to keep water away from the charge port though.

  • How can I find other Segway PT owners near me?
  • Segway Inc. has created a social networking site, Segway Social, specifically for Segway PT owners. Users can create or join groups of other Segway enthusiasts, tag Segway-friendly places, glides, and other areas of interest, share photos, and post messages on message boards. You can even track your Segway PT miles and use our green calculator just to show how smart your purchase is! Folks just interested in Segway and Segway products are welcome too. Come join the worldwide Segway movement!

  • Can I travel with my Segway PT? What about the lithium-ion batteries?
  • Traveling with your Segway PT using mass transportation is at the discretion of company policy. Some companies treat the Segway PT as baggage or an assistive device. In general, the lithium-ion batteries on Segway i2s and x2s are considered hazardous material and are not allowed on commercial passenger airlines. Still, you can ship your Segway PT anywhere by ground. Check with your local transit provider for more info.

  • Where can I find my Segway PT's serial number?
  • Lift the base's mat and look to the rear edge of the platform to locate your serial number. It will be a 12-digit number printed directly on the base of the unit. Make sure to write it down and store it in a safe place.

  • How should I dispose of my old batteries from a Segway PT?
  • Segway and The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation encourage you to help preserve our environment by returning your unwanted batteries to the nearest recycling collection point. Please check www.rbrc.org/consumer or call 1-800-822-8837 to find the nearest location.

  • How do I register my warranty with Segway Inc. after purchasing my Segway PT at a dealership?
  • Your authorized Segway dealer will register your machine(s) for you within 72 hours of your purchase. If you have questions regarding your warranty, please contact your local dealer directly.

  • I purchased my Segway PT from a private party (used). How do I transfer ownership to my name to receive the warranty balance?
  • To transfer ownership, you need to provide something in writing to Segway Customer Care. Please include a copy of the original invoice or bill of sale identifying the previous owner, the unit’s serial number, and your contact information, including name, address, telephone and email (optional). Fax this information to Segway Customer Care at +1.603.222.6001 or email it and attach your proof of purchase. You can also reach us toll-free at +1-866-4SEGWAY to chat with one of our super friendly customer care associates. They love to talk.

  • Can I reprogram my InfoKey controller?
  • You can do some basic programming, such as setting the time, date and whether you want the display to show miles or kilometers. You can also set the Beginner Setting speed, Standard Setting speed, and "off" time for Standby mode. Please refer to your User Materials for further details. If you feel additional programming is necessary, please contact your local Segway dealer.

  • Can the speed setting for a PT be locked?
  • Yes, each InfoKey controller can be locked into the beginner setting by a special sequence of button-presses. You can also set the Beginner Setting speed, Standard Setting speed, and "off" time for Standby mode. Further customization is possible by programming the InfoKey controller at the Segway factory. Programming each InfoKey controller separately is an additional service offered to customers that can be quoted per account by your local dealer.
